Homeschool Emergency!

Updated 3/24/2020.

There are lots of reasons you might need to start  homeschooling fast - maybe you have to do a quick move and it's the middle of the school year. Maybe your son is being bullied. Maybe someone in your home has developed a sudden illness or allergy that makes a regular school schedule impractical. Maybe your daughter got an incredible offer to apprentice for her dream job. Whatever the reason, you need resources fast!

My first piece of advice is don't panic! A lot of people when they first pull a child out of school worry they have to immediately jump in with six hours of schoolwork a day. You don't have to do that! Lots of folks take some time to decompress, get to know each other again, and talk about what interests their kids. They take time to find resources and support groups. They catch up on sleep, heal, and relax.

But, it's okay to get your feet wet with school, too. First find out what your state requires. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, but the laws vary from state to state. You can find out what your state requires at the Home School Legal Defense Association. HSLDA is a great organization! They are on top of all the legal stuff, offer legal representation to homeschool members who need it, help you find support groups in your area, and have worked out lots of deals and discounts for their members. Much of what they offer is free.

Some school districts offer an at-home option to use their curriculum, so check with your school. That is often the easiest way to get up and running.

There are a growing number of online and mail order curricula providers. You can get a complete package or mix and match. Many people start with a complete curriculum and then end up switching out pieces for programs they think will fit their family better.
